(ooc: FINALLY. Time to get this forbidden friendship off the ground! ...I'm impatient, shut up. Anyway, date is July 19. Closed to Toothless and Hiccup.)
It was fairly safe to say that Hiccup was really beginning to frequent the forest more times than would have been considered safe. It had gotten to the point where the redhead was beginning to memorize various landmarks in the woods. Trees, rocks, and other assorted parts of the woods were slowly becoming ingrained in Hiccup's memory. The fact that Astrid lived out there certainly did help to make things memorable. Today, though, Hiccup wasn't looking for Astrid. He wasn't looking for Snotlout, either. Gods forbid he actually try to seek out his cousin. No, today Hiccup was more interested in trying to bring light to what had happened to him during the fight that had occurred such a long time ago. ...Okay, so it wasn't a very long time ago. Hiccup didn't care about the technicalities. He wanted to find out what he had done in that fight.
Today Hiccup found himself free of the sling his arm had been in, having learned it was almost completely healed by that point, and so he was in better spirits. He still couldn't shake the prosthetic leg, though. That would be staying forever. He was getting used to it, his walking becoming a bit easier at last, but he still hated it. Hated being crippled. He hated that the others at the castle, save Rapunzel and the others he felt close to, looked at him differently. Like he was a freak. Annoyance was obvious in his eyes as that thought processed. He knew it was true, though. He was a freak. Accepting it wasn't something he wanted to do, but he did regardless. It's just proof the universe hates me. he thought.
Hiccup was able to push those thoughts away as he looked up from his silent fuming. He blinked a couple of times, almost as if he vaguely recognized this area of the woods, and looked around slowly. Was there anything there that he recognized? He thought he could see blood on the ground, but whether or not it was his was hard to determine. For all Hiccup knew it could have been the blood of some prey animal. "Still nothing. Am I ever going to be able to remember anything from that fight?" Hiccup wondered out loud. He was about to turn around and head back, but something strange caught his eye. Something he hadn't noticed before. ...It appeared as though something had been through the area at some point recently. Something large enough to leave unmistakable evidence that something had crashed through the underbrush. Whatever it was, Hiccup suddenly found himself intrigued. He had to know what was out there.
Without thinking of what this something could be, Hiccup began to move in the direction he thought this creature had gone. His movements weren't fast by any means, especially since his leg made him lag a bit, but he thought he was getting there at a decent speed. Sooner or later he would find out what was out there. Whether or not it was friendly was something he hadn't taken into consideration. All Hiccup wanted to know was what he was dealing with. Astrid probably would have been chastising him by that point, saying he was an idiot for rushing out so recklessly, but he didn't care. There was something out there, and gods dammit he wanted to know what was there that probably hadn't been there before!
Soon enough, Hiccup discovered a sort of clearing. There was no way he would have been able to know about this area. He'd never ventured this far into the woods before on his own. Needless to say, Hiccup felt as though his breath was taken away. This land looked so untouched. So untamed. It was almost like it was right out of Berk. It even had a good sized body of water nearby that distinctly reminded him of something he would see back home. "My gods... if this is a dream, don't wake me up." Hiccup murmured. He wondered if the something was in this area just waiting for him to show up. Somehow he doubted it, but if it was... well, Hiccup felt prepared to meet whatever it was. At least, he hoped he was prepared. One way or another, though, he was going to see something. He just felt he was.

Two weeks. It'd been nearly two weeks since the dragon had to learn to fend for himself without the gift of flight. Perhaps a downed dragon really was a dead dragon. There was no way he was going to make it back to the demon headquarters. Not a chance. The Night Fury demon knew that the instant he had lost his tail fin. Even if he had made it, he would have most likely been exiled. Banished. Or killed. It looked like he'd kill himself trying to survive anyways, however, looking closely at his options now. Now he was stuck in the woods, stealing the vampire and werewolf prey, fending for himself, even defending himself at some points.
Speaking of prey, it was obvious that the demon dragon had finally been successful in a hunt. A fishing hunt. Prideful of his catch of the day, the dragon had a fish, a species which the dragon didn't quite care to look into, hanging out of his mouth. Bright and joyous orbs quickly flashed to startled, alert slits. A deep breath through his nostrils told him something was there. Not the usual smell of prey, or canine, or death. Man. A human, most likely a wizard, was in the forest. Ear-like appendages pinned to his head. It was behind him. That much he knew for sure. The dragon stopped dead in his tracks.
There was a human around. The dragon surely must have not looked too intimidating with his fish, but he didn't care enough about that to eat it just yet. He may be able to just taunt whoever wandered into the forest with food. He could hide and sneak up on him. It was a plan, right? With sly steps, he wandered into the trees, hoping that the wizard would wander into the clearing.
Mischief was on the dragon's mind today. It seemed like a victim just seemed to walk right on in today.

Hiccup still couldn't see anything in the area. Maybe he had wandered into a place that had been unoccupied. Still, he didn't think that was the case. He had seen evidence of habitation. Scratched ground, dirt upturned... there had to be something out there. He would have to move closer into the clearing to find out what was in there. Unfortunately for him, the flames inside him remained cool. Unwilling to come out to defend their master. Hiccup wasn't terribly concerned with defending himself since he didn't know what was out there. All he wanted to know what was there. He inhaled deeply and began to make his way toward the clearing.
This is fine. It's perfectly fine. There's probably nothing to worry about anyway. Maybe it's just werewolf territory or something.
Wishful thoughts. Hiccup didn't look terribly threatening and he knew that. Scrawny body, a childish appearance about him, and the fact that he was crippled all made him appear very weak. It was no wonder a demon had picked on him during the fight nearly two weeks ago. Whatever was out in the current area he was in probably was looking at him like he was some tasty treat. For all he knew, he was getting ever closer to being jumped on and attacked. That didn't make the crippled wizard feel any better.
...It was quiet. Too quiet. Hiccup stopped moving, prosthetic foot directly in front of him, and he waited. If there really was something there, it had the perfect opportunity to sneak up on him.

The Night Fury's tail restlessly swished back and forth, pale lime eyes finally finding his target. A human. Just as he suspected. Though, there was something about him that was... off. Perhaps it had simply been because he was used to beefy, muscle vikings, and he was simply so twiggy. No, the dragon had gotten used to the skinnier population of humans. His hair color didn't strike him as odd. The dragon continuously scanned up and down, trying to figure out what it was that was so odd when he finally decided to give up on the reasoning.
The only thing rushing through his mind was mischief, and how tasty the fish hanging out his mouth was going to be. Deciding to scare the viking a bit, he leaped out of his hiding place right behind the redhead teen. That's when he finally figured out what was odd about him. His leg. He was crippled, just as the demon dragon was. The dragon knew that wasn't his real leg. It was made of metal. This was a living being, not a machine. It was now clear to the dragon that he had been crippled in some accident.
Kind of like he had been crippled in the fight.

The sound of something landing behind him practically made Hiccup jump right out of his skin. The squeaky sort of yelp that followed certainly didn't help to prove he was manly in any sense of the word. No, the redhead had all but thrown his manhood out the window. Not that he had ever been all that manly in the first place. Oh gods... oh gods... please, whatever's back there don't let it kill me. Hiccup begged silently. He'd had too many close calls recently. The battle with Izaya, almost dying from demon blood poisoning him, losing his leg, and almost falling to his untimely doom from atop a waterfall had all left an impact on the redhead. Whatever was back there, Hiccup could only silently assume it wanted to cause harm rather than good.
When Hiccup did turn around and back up a little, though, he found what had startled him to not be quite as freaky as he had been imagining. A dragon was what he saw. Granted, it was still a factor worthy of leaving Hiccup more than a little frightened but it wasn't a demon like Izaya. Then again, for all Hiccup knew the dragon could have been a demon as well. He certainly didn't look the part, especially with that fish dangling out of his mouth, but looks were deceiving. Hiccup knew that better than anyone.
...Wait. This isn't just your common, garden variety dragon. Hiccup realized. He was black as night. Sleek. Hiccup had never seen a dragon like that before. Or had he? He could vaguely recall the shape of a dragon against the night sky from the night of the fateful dragon raid, but he had never put it to memory. The fact that he had never seen this type of dragon before, though, led Hiccup to conclude what he must have been; Night Fury. At least, he was assuming this was a Night Fury. It was the one species no one in Berk had ever seen up close, so he was only going based on his imagination. If this was a Night Fury, then what was going to happen? Hiccup was led to believe that the dragon didn't want to bring him harm, as he appeared to be satisfied with the fish in his mouth, but that could only leave him to wonder what the dragon did want to do.
"...Hi." Hiccup said at length. Wow, what a stupid greeting. came the biting remark from the back of his mind. Hiccup knew he must have sounded stupid. He also knew something else, though. He hadn't tried to attack the dragon. Why? ...He really didn't know. Now that Hiccup found himself faced with a dragon, shouldn't he have tried to fight? Shouldn't he have been trying to prove that he was a Viking? ...Maybe it just didn't matter anymore whether or not he could kill a dragon. What would it prove, anyway? Stoick wasn't around to see him. He wasn't there to be proud of this accomplishment. So Hiccup concluded that he simply didn't care as much about proving his worth as a Viking anymore. He'd been rejected from their society long ago. Killing a dragon wasn't going to change that. So, he decided to go with a different approach; he wanted to try and prove he wasn't going to hurt this Night Fury.
Hiccup stood relatively still before Toothless. It was almost as if he was welcoming the majestic dragon to come closer and sniff him, or at least inspect him to somehow prove he wasn't dangerous. What was even better was that the fire wizard's fire was, in fact, not coming up within him at all. It was as if said fire had temporarily abandoned him. So, there Hiccup stood in front of Toothless awaiting whatever would follow.

Deciding he couldn't wait any longer, the dragon swallowed the fish, causing it to no longer hang out his mouth. Perhaps now, he'd look just a tad more intimidating. Though, what had intrigued the beast was that Hiccup just sort of stood still. Cocking his head to the side just a tad in confusion as to why he just stood there, the dragon crouched slightly, taking cautious steps towards the teen viking. His nostrils inhaled and exhaled rapidly as he sniffed Hiccup, deciding to inspect him.
He didn't really seem too dangerous. Not really aggressive body language. Still, people were unpredictable. He might be a werewolf, ready to attack. Perhaps a vampire, waiting for a crimson beverage to just walk up to him for free. A wizard, using his magic against the Night Fury. The possibilities were endless on what the ebony scaled dragon had to look out for. Smokey lime eyes scanned up and down repeatedly, inspecting Hiccup for quite some time. He couldn't be a vampire. Usually, the eyes could show you if you were a vampire or a demon. There wasn't a somewhat canine smell about him, so the chances that he was a werewolf were fairly low. No wings, not a fairy or angel. Surely, he must have been a normal human, or a magic wielder. Considering he couldn't save his leg, the dragon assumed the former.
The prosthetic leg perplexed the dragon a bit. He sniffed it for quite some time, ear-like appendages perked up to show a bit of interest. Realizing that the chances were low that this was a threat, the dragon stood still, awaiting for the viking to make a move, tail swishing breifly. The dragon figured he could have weapons hidden somewhere in his clothing, but the only item remotely close to a weapon he could really sniff out was the prosthetic leg.

Hiccup just stood there, almost as if he was anticipating some kind of attack from Toothless, and watched as the dragon made his move. He seemed particularly interested in his leg, Hiccup realized. Perhaps this was because he'd never seen something like it before. Hiccup supposed that made sense; if he were a dragon who came across a crippled human, he probably would have been quite interested in the different appendage. Hiccup's own emerald gaze went up and down Toothless a couple of times and he found himself growing more interested in the dragon. For what must have been a dangerous dragon, he certainly wasn't acting upon any impulses of violence. Granted, he did look a bit more threatening after downing the fish.
Something about Toothless' appearance did strike Hiccup as odd. He found himself looking to Toothless' tail, following it with his eyes, and finally noticed the lack of a left tail fin. Oddly enough, it was the left tail fin that was gone. Just like Hiccup's left leg had been the one to suffer. "That's some kind of coincidence if I've ever seen it. We've both got a part of us missing." Hiccup said. He didn't know if Toothless could understand him. He could at least gesture to their similarities, though. He motioned to his prosthetic, then to Toothless' tail. "Isn't it weird? We're kind of... alike, I guess." he said.
Except he's not a failure.
Hiccup had to wonder about that. Was Toothless a reject like him? Were there any other similarities between them? Oh, if only he could communicate with the dragon verbally. It would have made things easier. "How long have you been out here?" Hiccup asked. He didn't expect a verbal answer. He did want to know just how long Toothless had been there, though. Did Astrid know he was out there? Probably not. The Viking werewolf would have attacked him without hesitation and aside from his tail fin, Toothless seemed to be okay.

Large, round orbs watched the viking teen motion to their disabilities. Hiccup, with his prosthetic leg, and the demon dragon, with his missing tail fin. At least Hiccup could still walk around with his artificial leg. The Night Fury, on the other hand, had no ability to fly. At the very least, not for long before flailing into the earth below. Then again, he didn't even have an artificial tail fin. Figuring out that he wasn't a demon or a dragon, the dragon realized the only way he could communicate with him was physically. Through body language. He couldn't speak with him, he knew that. But if he could use body language instead of verbal language maybe he could get his point across to him.
He could understand tidbits here and there from what the viking was saying, especially when he motioned to both their disadvantages. Hiccup noted their similarities too. Of course, he could probably still get back to where he lived. The dragon, on the other hand, couldn't. So, ever since that fight a little less than two weeks ago, he'd stayed hidden from the vampires and lycans, taking refuge in the woods. The demons surely thought of him as a failure by now anyways.
The dragon glanced over Hiccup once more, beginning to circle him this time, eyes briefly slits to show he was a bit cautious. The only other similarity he could find was his eyes. Both creatures had green eyes. Circling back in front of Hiccup, the dragon sat down, head tilted just slightly to the side a bit. How long had Hiccup been injured? With his short snout, he pointed to Hiccup, hoping he'd expound on the subject.
Vaugely, the dragon could recall seeing Hiccup. It was the same day he lost his flight. Maybe that was the same day he lost his leg?

Hiccup watched Toothless carefully, trying to figure out what he was trying to get at, and let his mind wander a little all the while. He couldn't remember much from the fight nearly two weeks ago, but if the dragon before him was here in the woods then maybe he had been in the fight. He could only vaguely guess at what Toothless was trying to say. The fact that he was motioning toward him seemed to indicate that he wanted to know something about him. Hiccup could guess it had to do with his leg. After all, Toothless had seemed particularly interested in that aspect about himself.
"You... want to know about this?" Hiccup asked. He held said leg just a little bit off the ground to indicate what he was guessing at. Even if that wasn't it, he didn't mind terribly having to explain it. Toothless hadn't seen it happen to him. He hadn't seen him be attacked by a demon. "Well, I think it was about... two weeks ago, now. There was this fight in the woods that I didn't want to be a part of, but I ended up involved anyway. All because I was stupid and thought 'Hey. The woods would be a great place to work out that limp you got'." Hiccup said. Stupid Snotlout. The redhead felt convinced it was partially his cousin's fault he had wound up in the woods in the first place. If he hadn't injured him he wouldn't have wanted to go out in the woods that day. Hiccup didn't mention any of this out loud, though. He brought one hand to the back of his neck and looked downward, almost as if he was ashamed to speak further on the subject, before opening his mouth again.
"I wound up fighting a demon. Most of the fight is a blur, though. I remember feeling my leg get stabbed..." Hiccup trailed off. That was when his memory had been shot by bursts of intense pain and the nausea had taken over him. After that all he really remembered was Astrid trying and failing to save him. "...And then I woke up elsewhere. I don't know what happened. All I know is this angel took me off the battlefield and my leg was like this when I woke up." he said.

There were some words that Toothless knew for sure. He used those to figure out what else Hiccup had said. From what he got out of it, he'd been attacked by a demon, rescued by an angel. Demon. The dragon's momentarily flickered red at the sound of that word. He was a demon. A demon dragon, but still a demon. Surely, he'd been abandonned by them. They didn't come looking for him. Nobody tried to find him in the forest. Maybe they didn't know where to look, but the Night Fury doubted it. Highly doubted it.
His nostrils flared briefly at the thought of them before finally being able to shake it off. He didn't want to scare off the wizard teen. At the very least, not yet. He wanted to know a bit more about him. Hoping to show him that he'd been attacked in the same fight, the dragon creeped up a tad closer the wizard, tapping his foot lightly with his tail. Hpoefully, he'd understand that he lost his own tail fin in a fight.
Probably the same fight even.

This time, Hiccup really was perplexed by what the demon dragon was trying to say. It would have been so much easier if he could speak the same language as the dragons. What would he even call it? Dragonese? ...Right. If he really wanted to be laughed out of the universe, he'd call it that. But Hiccup knew he couldn't speak such a language. That would require him not to be a complete and total failure. Him actually accomplishing something good? Please. That wasn't going to happen. Back to the matter at hand, though, he thought about what message might have been conveyed just then. They had both received injuries and lost a part of themselves. Was that what Toothless was trying to say? Doubtful. Hiccup had already figured that much out himself. So... what was it?
A part of them from the very same side had been lost. They had been in a fight, obviously, though Hiccup had only been involved accidentally. Could it have been that they wound up in the same battle at the same time? Part of Hiccup didn't think it was entirely unlikely. Maybe that was what Toothless was trying to get across. ...Then again, maybe Hiccup was insane and he was trying to make sense of what a dragon was trying to get across. Given all that had happened to him, Hiccup wouldn't have been surprised if he was insane. He was conversing with a dragon and not trying to kill him, after all. Even if he hadn't already been banished from Berk he would have been gawked at.
"...It can't just be a coincidence that we both got a part of our left sides hurt." Hiccup reasoned. "I don't know if it's possible, but maybe we were out here at the same time." he finally said. That could have been it. He might have become so focused on trying to apologize to Astrid about burning her and trying to survive his fight with Izaya that he hadn't even noticed Toothless. But... how could he be sure if he really had been in the same battle?
An idea came to Hiccup after a moment. They couldn't communicate verbally, but what about visually? There was a stick not far from where Hiccup stood. A fairly large stick, at that. He held up a finger, trying to convey that he wanted Toothless to stay put, before approaching the stick and picking it up. He made his way back slowly, making sure the stick wasn't positioned in a way that might have been perceived as threatening, and laid it down near Toothless before stepping back into the spot he had been in moments before and crouching down. His own drawing utinsile would have to be a small rock he noticed near him. Picking it up between two fingers, Hiccup began thinking about how he could word what he wanted to ask Toothless.
"Let's try this. If you were in the fight, do you think maybe you could... show me what you fought?" Hiccup asked. He used his little rock and scratched out a couple of lines in the dirt, then looked up at Toothless again. He could have sworn that moments before he had tried to piece together what Toothless was trying to convey he had seen the dragon's eyes flash red. Hiccup just brushed it off as being delusional, though. He must have imagined it. He hoped, much like Toothless had moments before, that his message had been conveyed. Strange though it was.
